Summary: his work is an intellectual response to the problems of communalism, separa tism, extremism and probable dismember ment of the country. AII these have been putting immense pressure on the state and nation-building processes. With this backdrop, the book presents a theory of Positive Secularism to remedy some of the historical blunders and provide an ideational foundation for the re-structuring of multi-religious, multi-racial an assidously plural general, and that of th eulticultural polities in Indian Political system in particular. Positive Secularism herein has been onceived in the light of historical events churned out of ancient, medieval an modern periods of the Western and the Indian history. All misconceptions anddistortions attached with ex-cathera secularism have been subjected to a rigorous analytical scrutiny and exposed fully to all open minds. For the first time, the author has proposed to refor- mulate secularismn on the basis of India's basic needs and requirements. Transformation of Indian secularism from model-one to model-two has been dispassionately examined and evaluated suggesting some constructive guidelines to make it a part of national ethos and a living reality. This could be done by amending the present politico-legal struc- ture and secularising the people so as to make them capable enough for entering into the twenty-first century, and live thereafter as human beings and worthy citizens.
