Preston King fled the United States in 1961 following his arrest and conviction by federal authorities for early involvement in the Southern Civil Rights Move ment. He has been exiled from America for twenty-five years.
He has taught philosophy and politics since he was twenty-two, first at the London School of Economics, then at Keele and Sheffield Universities. Since 1963 he has worked in and regularly visited Africa, lecturing for four and six years respectively in Ghana and Nairobi and serving in Cameroon and elsewhere for shorter periods. During his time in Nairobi, he derived most pleasure from setting up the Diplomacy Training Programme at the University.
