Summary: During the early years, there was enough land to support the limited population bu today population explosion has remarkably reduced the man-land ratio. Geographers and Planners and other schloars have realiz ed the importance of intensive and proper use of land and started paying serious attention to the problem. The present work by Dr. Jainendra Kumar is the outcome of an intensive fieldwork of land-use of Nalanda district of Bihar---an area which has ever remained significant for its civilization and agricultural pursuit, The author has long and intimate relation ship with the area and has critically analysed the various aspects of agricultural land-use with particular emphasis on cropping inten sity, diversity of cropping and crop-combi nation. He has given exhaustive coverage to each of twelve sample villages selected from the twelve Development Blocks representing different types of land, soil and cropping pattern with a common problem of ensuring timely and adequate agricultural water supply. The author has identified a number of problems some of which arise out of defective agricultural practices and lack of consideration holdings resulting in misuse of land. He has highlighted control of the soil erosion, consolidation of land, develop ment of irrigation facilities, modernization of agricultural implements, good varieties of seeds, use of fertilizers, use of pesticides. crop insurance, dry cropping, etc., for the proper utilization of land. The book is fully illustrated by a number of maps and photo graphs which enhance its value. This book will be of interest to academicians and researchers alike and should prove use ful to those directly concerned with the planning pt land-use and agriculture.
