Summary: This book an approach to the analysis of nations which we believe is useful to policymakers, especially corporate managers. It suggests that ideology, as defined in chapter 1, is a particularly effective tool for understanding national communities: how and why they evolved, what the tensions within them are, and how they differ from one another. Furthermore, an awareness of ideology helps one inspect assumptions about such matters as the role of government, the purpose of business, the relationships between the two, the relations between managers and managed, and sources of management authority. For analytical purposes we start by outlining two ideological types: indiviualism and communitarianism. In chaper 2-10 we trace the evolution of various forms and combinations of these two in nine countries.
