Professor Rostow distinguishes five basic stages of economic growth. He explains each stage in detail and gives illustrative examples. He also applies the concept of stages of growth to an examination of the problems of military aggression and the nuclear arms race. In his final chapter he presents a comparison of his analysis with Marxist theory. The first edition was widely reviewed and Professor Rostow has included in the second edition a new appendix in which he answers some of his critics.
