An Arab diplomat analyzes the history of the relations between Israel and the Arab countries and describes his involvement in the efforts to achieve a peaceful solution
The tragedy of Palestine, which I have watched closely since 1948, has however been my main concern and thinking throughout that period. I saw Palestine when its people were struggling for independence, then when Zionism succeeded in seizing part of its territory, and finally when it gained control of the whole of it. I therefore decided that this book should concentrate on the Arab-Israeli conflict that was caused by the Palestine issue. I have refrained from giving a historical study of the issue, which has been the subject of detailed dissertations in a number of languages, and have concentrated on the stages of the conflict and the many attempts at establishing peace which have been forfeited. Such attempts are still being tried without success in spite of the lapse of thirty years. I saw also the importance of explaining the role of the major powers who inflamed the problem and nourished the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the leading role played by the United States in the continuation of this strife until the present day.
