Political development in the States has reached a saturation point and is witnessing the emergence of new style of politics, viz., coalitionism, fragmentation of party system, high incidence of communal articulation and agitational type of politics etc. The Congress which united the socio-economic forces of the society on its drive for independence struggle, soon lost the mass character due to factionalism, personal rivalries and communal cleavage.
The people of Kerala, noted for the curious political behaviour, by electing the Commu nists to power in 1957 through democratic means, now seemed to reject the Congress for good. With the tiny strength of nine members in the Assembly, the INC was learning the hard lessons by doing construc tive home work. The metamorphosis that took place in the INC since 1967 has become the centre point of this work.
