Summary: This book was planned to cover developments up to the end of 1947. There are therefore few references to events after this date, and indeed have arisen from the nationalization of some of the main industries. Because few studies of strikes have been published in this country, the main sources of material are two: firstly the official and quasi-official publications, and secondly references in books, pamphlets, and articles on related topics. While the former are well known, a list of the latter would be likely to involve either invidious: selection or tedious enumeration. There therefore seemed little value in pre senting a formal bibliography; but it is hoped that the reader will be able to find the references he needs with the aid of the index and the extensive notes,
