Summary: Population Foundation of India organised the Millennium Conference on "Population, Development and Environment Nexus' in collaboration with Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from February 14 to 16, 2000. The main objectives of the conference were to study the: Demographic trends and prospects in the 21st century; Population policies and programmes: retrospects and prospects; Population and economic development, political systems, gender equity, ageing and social security; Population and social development including education, health and housing; Population and ecology in relation to sustainable development; Migration and urbanisation. The purpose of the conference was to • understand the inter-relationship between population growth and distribution in the country with various facets of social and economic development and ecological changes as they occurred during the previous century; especially after independence; • make alternative projections at the district level on population; economic growth and social changes and assess their inter relationship during the 21st century; and • recommend a framework of policy guidelines and programme recommendations needed to have sustainable development in the country.
