Consider what Japan has achieved although she was faced with the bleakest possible situation at the end of World War II. Defeat had crippled her economy and all but destroyed her spirit of adventure. Japanese cities were severely hit by air attacks. A quarter of their housing accommodation was destroyed; factories were extensively damaged. The total cost of the physical damage was almost twice the whole of the Gross National Income of the fiscal year 1948-49. The economy lay in ruins-acute inflation had et in; food and other necessities were in short supply. The people -ere in acute distress, disillusioned and disheartened.
