Electricity remains the most crucial of the infrastructure sectors. It is the basic input for any economic activity. The growth of the economy thus hinges on the growth of the power sector. The Government of India realized that drastic reforms were required in the power sector to meet the rising demands of energy in the fast growing economy of the country. The Electricity Act, 2003 was but a thought germinating out of this need of time. This is a historic legislation in that it encompasses a complete package for reforms of the power sector.
