Summary: Bihar today is symbolic of the backwardness of the entire country. A feudal social outlook, an iniquitous economic structure, unresponsive political leadership and apathetic bureaucracy have all led to the growth of disappointed and disgruntled groups deprived of even the minimum needs for a decent living. The essays brought together in this volume based on the secondary sources and empirical data seek to explore some of these important aspects of Bihar's economy and society. The rigorous examination of the problems of economic backwardness, the demand and supply position of food grains, major constraints of industrialization, the role of commercial banks, patterns of urbanization and processes of social stratification make this an extremely stimulating and interesting work. This study thus provides one with some useful understanding of the nature and enormity of Bihar's socio-economic problems. The book which forms part of the first issue of the B.N. College Patna Series planned and implemented by a group of young teachers of the College should be of particular value to students of economics and sociology engaged in the study of Bihar.
