Summary: India has now achieved self-sufficiency in food production particularly in the case of cereals. However, in two other areas, namely, the production of oilseeds and pulses, much remains to be done . Oilseeds occupy an important position in the Indian economy as they provide much needed protein and energy to the human and livestock population and also earn precious foreign exchange to the country.
