Summary: I have always wanted to write about India, because it is a place from which no traveller return unchanged, so that to write about it is irresistibly to write about what is important to oneself. Yet I might have resisted the temptation were it not for the fact that, during the period 1973-76, when I was posted to new Delhi, India and my own country Australia experienced crises that shook each to its foundations, culminating in the declaration of Emergency in India by the Gandhi government on 11 November the same year.
