THIS PUBLICATION contains the proceedings of a seminar on the Social Res ponsibilities of Trade Unions which was organized by the India International Centre, New Delhi, this year between March 29 and 31. This was the second in a series of three seminars which the India International Centre, New Delhi, and the Gandhian Institute of Studies, Varanasi, had jointly planned some time ago on the seminal concept of social responsibility in its application to the conduct of organized trade and industry.
The first seminar, on the Social Responsibilities of Business, was held at the Centre from March 15 to 21, 1965. It is hoped to organize the third and the last seminar in this series, on the Social Responsibilities of the Public Sector, sometime next year.
In sponsoring this seminar, as well as the earlier one on the Social Res ponsibilities of Business, the organizers were motivated by the belief that the concept of responsibilitiy, as they visualized it, provided the key to an adequate understanding and solution of the problems of industrial and commercial rela tions in modern society, and that, therefore, it was of the utmost importance that the implications of this concept deserved to be fully thrashed out in multi lateral dialogues among the theoreticians and practitioners in this area. This was the basic impulse behind the series of the seminars.
