Summary: The diversity of adaptive patterns is studied in this book about people whose roots are in the Indian subcontinent, and who now live in Canada, USA, Britain, Fiji, Malaysia, Australia and the Caribbean. Have overseas Indians reacted to prejudice and dominance by retreating into the security of a cohesive group, and been accused by the host society of being clannish, creating little Indias, and not wanting to integrate into their land of choice? Have they tried to integrate but been selective in their choice of values and social institutions? Between the processes of cultural persistence and cultural change, what is happening to their children? The study finds that while there are some common features among the various groups under consideration, there are also significant discontinuities at many levels of social organization.
