Sociology of Kinship is an analytical and critical survey of literature on kinship and the family in the Indian sub-continent. The study was commissioned by the Indian Council of Social Science Research and covers significant publications from the beginnings of Indian sociology to 1969. The survey is mainly focused on the work of sociologists and social anthropologists, but relevant work of indologists and other social scientists has also been noted.
This work represents a candid stock taking of accomplishments and lacunae in the sociology of kinship and the family in India. The author has made perceptive suggestions regarding fields of enquiry that need to be taken up and new directions which future research should take.
