There is no subject so grave and dangerous as national consciousness can be; its deficiency in a nation is worse than underdevelopment and abundance amounts to chauvinism which is far more problematic than affluence. National consciousness is an end-product, something which flows from the socio-cultural reality. Naturally, therefore, the study of such an area is bound to spill over to a number of disciplines. Hence, in this volume, we have a constellation of distinguished writers from different fields who approach the problem from different angles. Taken together, the contributions deal with the nature, development and dynamics
of national consciousness in India. Different schools, movements and strategies of rousing even partisan communal on sciousness and the role of literature have also been dealt with. However, there is no search for group mind or soul, nor is there any great-nation metaphysics in these writings.
