Summary: The essays on "Sociology of Social Stratification" and "Concepts and Theories of Social Change" in India presented in this volume were prepared originally for the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) trend report in Sociology. The themes of these essays formed the basis of my lectures at various univer sities in India under the National Lectureship Programme of the University Grants Commission for the year 1973-74. Since the publication of the ICSSR trend report in Sociology there have" been several requests that these essays may be brought out separately in a volume for wide circulation. In the reproduction of the two essays only minor editorial changes have been made from the original text. I thank the ICSSR for the permission to reproduce these essays. The credit for bringing these out goes to Shri R.C. Jain whose persistent and keen personal interest made this project possible. My colleague, Dr. K.L. Sharma, helped me originally in preparation of the two essays for the ICSSR. I thank both of them for the help. There are several other persons whom I can not mention by name due to paucity of space but whose contribu tions have been of great help in the publication of this volume. My thanks are due to all of them.
