This book is an in-depth study of tribal politics in North-East India from 1874 to 1974. The book has been divided into three parts. Part I discusses political developments in the North eastern region, relations bet ween the tribals and the British, the constitutional position and the political institutions in the tribal communities. Part II studies the formation of district councils, their constitutional structure and functional aspects. Part III is devoted to state poli tics in the tribal areas. It deals at length with the eventuality of Assam being split into five poli tical entities of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Maghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland, and discusses the political structure in these regions from way back in 1874.
The book will be useful to the students of political science and particularly of tribal com munities, and also to the general reader interested in the field.
