Summary: Professor Aswini K.Ray, after completing M.A. in Calcutta and Ph.D. with Magna-cum-Laud at Heidelberg University, has been a Professor of International Relations and Comparative Politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, since 1974 till his retirement in 2003. He has been associated with many Universities and Research Institutes in India and abroad, including London School of Economics, Sorbonne, Tokyo, Uppsala and Mexico. He is in the International Advisory Board of the prestigious Cambridge Review of International Affairs. His earlier publications, apart from numerous chapters in collected volumes, include Domestic Compulsions and Foreign Policy, (New Delhi, 1975) and The Global System: A Historical View from the Periphery, (Tokyo, 1996). He has been an activist of the civil rights movement in India and associated with the National Human Rights Commission, National Literacy Mission and has been actively involved in the training and recruitment of the Indian Civil Services through his long association with the Union Public Service Commission in various capacities.
