We live at a time when it takes a lot of courage to celebrate diversity as a 'philosophy of life". The book is a bold attempt at rediscovering the uniquely South and South East Asian versions of Islam that made and continues to make it possible for a multiplicity of groups and communities to live together and weave a common social fabric - notwithstanding the severest attacks on it particularly in recent years. What strikes me about the book is the optimism that the author exudes in all its pages - an optimism that also secretes from his desperateness.
