Our cities are in crisis, and rejuvenating them will be the country's biggest challenge in the years to come. Millions live without the basic amenities of clean water and sanitation, and we may not have seen the worst yet, with the urban population of India projected to increase to 600 million by 2031.
Transforming Our Cities injects hope in this bleak scenario, based on the experience of change for the better in some Indian cities in recent years. For instance, Malkapur in Maharashtra is the first town in India to provide 24x7 water supply to all its residents. Surat's transformation from the city of plague to one of the cleanest cities in India should provide inspiration to all. Restoration of biodiversity in parts of Delhi Ridge, bringing Pashan lake of Pune back to its glory of the past, and conservation work in Bhubaneswar to preserve the rich heritage of this temple city are some other examples of transformation.
The case studies were first documented by Isher Judge Ahluwalia in her monthly column, 'Postcards of Change', in the Indian Express and the Financial Express. The updated versions presented in Transforming Our Cities confirm that the success that was earlier documented has been sustained. Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Indore, Jaipur, Magarpatta City and many others have responded to the challenges of urbanization in innovative ways.
