Summary: The book is an ingenious blend of a history of money and monetary institutions, with an analysis of money's changing role in the sum total of economic analysis and policy. I can think of no single book on this subject that would give so immediate and so penetrating an insight into a subject which is not only naturally difficult, but which has also been unnecessarily complicated by the "experts." That it is written with Professor Galbraith's usual wit and elegance does not need to be said. Parts of it are a sheer joy to read and are, in their vivacity and élan, highly reminiscent of certainly his most delightful book.
