Manthan started in April 2006 with the support of International Development Research Center (IDRC) Canada to enhance performance and accountability of Non Government Organizations (NGOs). The project was intiated by Chaitanya - a resource organization for community based microfinance institutions with the aim to train NGO staff for systematic capacity building to nurture critical thinking and reflection. The project sought to give them technical knowledge and skills for organizational development and change.
Currently, Manthan gives technical inputs to 55 NGOs of Maharashtra and facilitates fund raising efforts for network organizations. In the process it has developed a set of manuals on different themes in organizational development. It has gradually expanded its scope to organizations willing to facilitate their own development or of other organizations.
Manthan also has collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) Mumbai for certificate and diploma courses on "NGO Management and Resource Mobilization" for semi-skilled NGO staff or development oriented corporate employees. The course will establish a critical link between development academics and practice. It will reinforce the role of Manthan in building credibility for the NGO sector.
