Summary: Children of India, as elsewhere, are like tender flowers in a garden. Theoretically, their case, along with the mothers, is the responsibility of the society. But this is a stark contradiction between the existing conditions and the principles of the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of the Child. This is the sad reality in India, despite the many legislative and other measures taken towards child welfare since about a century. It will be many years before we can evolve an effective social security system on the lines of the welfare states of Europe. But the thrust of the efforts, both at the state level and institutional, is in that direction, the target being no more a mirage. a Here is a concise bibliography on Child Welfare in India making a timely appear- ance on the threshold of the International Year of the Child proclaimed by the United Nations for 1979. Since 1979 is also the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the Year of the child should serve as an opportunity for Each countr to increase its efforts to implement these rights, Fitting into this , context and fulfilling the need of the day, this well produced publication covers a wide spectrum. It is divided into such heads as Discipline, Education, Handi- capped, Health, Juvenile Delinquency, Labour and Employment, Nutrition, Laws, Marriage, Child Study and Welfare. The Bibliography will be of immediate, practical use to social scientists, researchers in various fields of social sciences and the knowledgeable amongst the far-flung field workers, grappling with the problems of welfare of the mother and the child.
