It was ten years ago that the Oshikawa Fellowship, named after the first APO Secretary-General who died in harness, was instituted with a view to providing annually an opportunity to a selected fellow to deepen his study in the field of small industry in the APO member countries in general and in his own country in particular, with the findings to serve as a possible input for national as well as regional development.
This volume presents the report of such a fellowship awarded to Dr. T.N. Jaitle, Director (Export Promotion), Office of the Development Commissioner, (Small Scale Industries), Government of India, in 1977, on the subject of Export Promotion of Selected Small Industry Products for Developing Countries. The report mainly deals with the role of small industries, particularly of electronics and autoparts, in promoting exports of six countries in the ESCAP region, as also the result of a survey of 39 firms undertaken in these countries. In the light of the findings, an attempt has also been made to review the prospects of increasing trade and economic cooperation between developing countries and Japan.
