Summary: This review paper was commissioned for an EDI International Workshop on Community Participation which was organized in Washington in September 1986. The paper reviews the international experience in the use of community participation, examines factors affecting the outcomes of participatory ap- proaches and provides guidelines for designing interventions to promote partici- pation. The experience and approaches of a number of national and international organizations are described.
