India 2001

In 25 years of planned economic development India has made appreciable progress in various sectors of the economy, specially agriculture, manufacturing and mining, and social services like education and medical care. Large sections of Indian society, how ever, continue to be poor.
This study in futurology attempts to view the shape of the Indian economy by the turn of the century. Among several other alternatives, this study investigates the possibility of India achieving, by the year 2001, a standard of living broadly commensurate with the present day average level of living of West European countries and Japan. Although, India's per capita production and consumption are at present low, this study is based on a firm conviction that if a proper pattern of development is evolved the common man in India can achieve by the turn of the century, a fruitful level of living which can ensure a fuller and purposeful life to him.
