National policy level workshop on appropriate management systems for agriculture cooperatives (AMSAC) : April 22-24,1985

Summary: Several studies have indicated that when cooperatives integrate processing and marketing of farm outputs along with production enhancement efforts through provision of farm gate services, the socio-economic conditions of the small farmers are substantially improved This, however, requires an integrated management system fully oriented to farm production activities on one hand and socio-economic needs of the members on the other. This is a part of the Appropriate Management Systems for Agricultural Co operatives (AMSAC) Programme which emphasizes vertical and horizontal integration through cooperatives. This approach was discussed at regional expert consultations organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in India and other parts of the world. These consultations not only approved the approach but more importantly recommended to FAO the urgent need to disseminate it amongst the countries. member In order to share this approach amongst the policy makers and cooperative organizations in India, NCDC in collabora tion with FAO and IIM is sponsoring the present workshop. To sensitize participants about the integrated approac to cooperative development; OBJECTIVES To sensitize participants regarding necessary steps for operationalizing the integrated approach in respect of different commodities; To help participants identify an action strategy to de velop agricultural cooperatives in their respective regions To help participants understand the existing linkages between primary agricultural credit cooperatives and marketing federations to enable them to project appr priate linkages in terms of the AMSAC approach; and To sensitize participants to the relevance of rural sto projects in strengthening primary credit and marketing societies and the role of training in better managere of the system. ICIPATION This workshop will be attended by chief executive apex cooperative banks, managing directors of marin cooperative federations, registrars/commissioners of operatives, and policy level personnel from centra selected state governments.
