Summary: "Children of Darkness" - A Manual on Child Labour - delves into the cause, magnitude and extent of the problem. Through case studies, an effort is made to capture the scenario which retards the future of millions of children. These "Children of darkness" never get to experience childhood and are forced to take up work endangers their safety, health and welfare: exploits them as cheap substitutes for adult labour; and impedes their education and training and thus prejudices their future. The manual also looks into the legislative remedies available in the past and the present and its overall implementation in the present socio-economic context. The manual states the problem - its roots and dimensions; the social and legal implications; the overnments efforts to tackle the problem; and lastly, in the given situation whether, there are any emedies available. The manual attempts to construct a comprehensive picture relating to the problem of child labour. does not pretend to answer all the questions-pertaining to child labour. It is primarily directed to iliarise voluntary organizations and social action groups, government fuctionaries, etc., with the plem, so that they can further reinforce their attempts in resolving it.
