Summary: Under what conditions do rural co operatives succeed? Do the poor really benefit from these successful cases? Can these successes be replicated in other regions? The essays in this volume attempt to answer such questions, being based on current findings from the study of co operatives at the grassroots level, particularly in Asia and Africa. The essays are grouped into four parts. The first part, on 'Co-operation and Inequality', examines the conditions under which co-operatives may or may not be paralysed by inequality, or may even cause greater inequality. The second part, 'Co operation and the State', reviews the problems caused both by official support and official opposition to local organizations. In 'Co-operation from Below' the analysis focuses on how informal, grassroots co-operation can work under some conditions, in contrast to official projects planned from the top down. Finally, 'Co-operation and Dairy Production in India' presents valuable case studies on the huge and controversial dairy development scheme known as Operation Flood.
