The Society for Development Studies is an autonomous non-profit Institution, which undertakes research and consultancy work and manpower dovelopment programmes in areas which have a bearing on the quality of human life. These include, among others, human settlement, public health, resource nobilisation and public policy.
The basic objective of this Workshop is to share experiences on the data base on informal sector households and experiments made in various count ries on mobilisation of savings of households having irregular and small in comen generally, through activities in the informal sector. It is hoped that the discussions in the Workshop and interactious amongst the participants will contribute towards developing, on the one hand, effective saving mobilisation strategies for informal sector householde and, on the other, a scientific methodology for doing further empirical work in the under-researched areas of informal sector economics, Linanced savings.
The Workshop is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India and the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa. The Indian Council of Social Science Research and the Housing and Urban Development Corporation have also supported the Workshop.
The papers presented in this volume include those which have been received by us upto December 2, 1986. They have been presented in their original form, without any changes. Papers received later will be circulated separately.
