Summary: The main thesis of The Secret Name is that the Russians are not incomprehensible, but very easy to understand. They are human beings like ourselves, subject to the same human incentives and motives. They want power and success and security. For example, why do they as a self-proclaimed socialist state use slave labor? Answer: It is profitable. No other kind of labor is so cheap, as old-time plantation owners would have readily admitted. And take the story of the "revolutionary herring." Why did the director of the North State Fisheries see to it that all the five-zero herring went to the top Communists and none of it to the proletariat? Answer: He only wanted to keep his job.
