Summary: An attempt is made in this study to prepare a programme of industrial development for Bihar covering the decade, 1979-80 to 1988-89. After making a study of the progress of economic development of the state in the past and examining the possibilities for economic growth, the report outlines a programme of development of large, medium, small and village industries. A study of the role of financial institutions and other specialised organisations for indus trial development has also been attempted. Unemployment and under-employment continue to be important socio-economic problems in Bihar as in other states in the country. This study suggests a pian for eco nomic development for absorbing about 6.5 million un employed persons by 1988-89 including 1.6 million persons in the industrial sector. As a result of the imple mentation of the industrial development programmes suggested in the report, income originating from the indus tries sector in the state is estimated to rise by Rs. 811 crores at 73-74 prices; of this additional income Rs. 478 crores would be from the household, village and small industries sub-sector.
