The whole book has been divided into ten chapters. The first chapter deals with the concept and philosophy of industrial demo cracy, analyses its different approaches, elucidates various connotations of the term and discusses its need in Indian industries. Chapter 2 is devoted to a broad discussion of the role and contribution of public sector in Indian economy and to a detailed study of the features of labour force in this sector. It also covers the need, scope and determi
nants of industrial democracy in public sector. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with Joint Management Councils and Joint and Shop Councils' respectively. The latter scheme having been introduced recently efforts have been made to make a compre hensive study of its main features to evaluate its performance and to suggest guidelines for its effective implementation.
Chapter 5 discusses the system of collective bargaining. It examines different levels, procedures and working of this system and suggests measures for making it more effective and viable. Chapter 6 attempts to analyse the scheme of workers' representation. on Boards of Directors. Since the management as well as the workers have various apprehensions regarding such representation, an attempt has been made to make a thread-bare study of its various implications. Specific guidelines have also been suggested for giving this scheme a fair trial.
Chapter 7 covers the functioning of Works Committees and other joint functional committees, chapter 8 analyses the scheme of workers' participation in profits and ownership and scrutinises the concept and feasibility of workers' sector and chapter 9 gives a brief and uptodate discussion of the patterns and forms of industrial democracy as found in foreign countries. The last chapter deals with the main findings and recommendations.
