Household savings has dominated the scene in the discussions about saving because this sector contributes more than two-thirds of the total domestic savings in India. Thus, there is a need to understand what factors govern the household saving behaviour. It must be worthwhile to find out who saves? How much is saved ? In what form savings are held? What are the group conventions of different seg ments of population in this respect ? What are the social and economic attributes of saver households? Do the educated people save more ? Is the size of family a determinant of say ings? Is household saving affected by the caste pattern, religious differences and sex composition ?
The book contains a perceptive analysis of these issues. It delineates the socio-economic factors affecting household saving behaviour through econometric techniques with primary data collected by a sample survey in the Delhi metropolitan region. Ana lysing the major contributions to the theories of saving behaviour, this study focusses on the interrelationships bet ween social factors, such as caste. family composition, ownership of pro perty, education, profession, age com position, and household savings. It also provides an analysis of consumer finance and household investment.
