Summary: The international Development Research Centre of Canada has organised a research programme for making an objective appraisal of the systems and performance of public enterprises in the South East Asian Countries. At the invitation of the Centre, India also participated in the programme along with seven other Asian countries. This volume presents the first part of the Project. This is perhaps the first attempt to view the Indian Public Enterprise Sector as a significant and important segment of the total economic and industrial structure of India. The Report describes the evolution of the public enterprise its current status and also the quantitative ,measure of its magnitude in terms of such macro national parameters as domestic product, savings, capital formation and employment. Public ownership and control as a means of satisfying society needs are increasingly finding acceptance in many countries.
