In the early part of this century, Dr. Joshua Castro, a Brazilian doctor, wrote a classic "A Geography of Hunger in the World". Many decades have elapsed but that work was not duplicated. In the early seventies, Professor Richard Morrill of University of Washington and others made a notable contribution through their work "A Geography of Poverty in America". In India, such attempts are yet lacking. The present book is a small faltering step towards that ambitious goal. The idea of preparing a series of books on different aspects of the problems of underdevelopment, poverty and hunger in India had been haunting me since the last decade, and, as an initial step, this work on underdevelopment. spatial disorganization, labour migration and inadequacy of planning strategies in India was prepared in 1975-76. The first volume of this series was "Poverty and Mobility in India: A Field Theoretic Perspective". and the third was "A Geography of Hunger and Poverty in India: Demographic Explosion. Food and Land Inequality" (forth coming). The first volume was written during 1970-74, this second one during 1975-76, and the third one during 1974-76. For some unforeseen reasons, publication of this second volume was much delayed. It is hoped that these work will urge others. to take up more socially relevant research issues and will stimulate further in-depth studies and action-oriented research.
