In the past half a century since it was founded the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry interested itself in a very wide range of subjects, from the quinine policy of the Government of India to Indian constitutional reforms, from turmeric colouring of pulses to India's five-year plans. Inevitably, a book like this which does not purport to be a definitive history of the institution had to be selective in treatment. I hope, however, that I have not overlooked any of the federation's major concerns. The terminal date is its 1976 annual meeting, although 1977 marks the Golden Jubilee session.
