Cities and towns in India are equally afflicted by the problems of slums and squatter settlements where a substantial segment of urban population manage to live even without basic services and amenities. Of late, there is found to be a positive response to solve this human problem. Besides the Central Scheme of Environmental Improvement, various other schemes and programmes have been initiated in our cities and towns for improving the quality of life in the slums. In view of the seriousness of the problem the Centre for Training and Research in Municipal Administration (now Centre for Urban Studies) of the Indian Institute of Public Administration organised a Seminar on Slum Clearance and Improvement during February 5-6, 1974 to deliberate on the problem of slums and to evolve guidelines for future action after evaluating the various policy options.
Several valuable papers were contributed at the Seminar by the academics, city administrators and planners belonging to different disciplines. This volume includes the papers and the reports of the Working Groups of the seminar on Slum Clearance, Slum Improvement, and Slum Prevention. It is hoped that the volume will be of practical use to the planners and urban administrators.
