It was an epic battle in Andhra Pradesh between Indira Gandhi's 97-year-old Congress Party and Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao's nine-month-old Telugu Desam Pa on January 5, 1983. Rama Rao astounded the world by emerging victor. The hero of 292 films, NT was at the peak of his 33-year fil career when, all of a sudden, he launched the Telugu Desam party in March 1982 "to bring back the glory of the 3,000-year old heritage of the Telugu people."
He took to politics, he said, to do something for the people of Andhra Pradesh, who admired and patronised him and made him rich and famous. In nine months, he stormed literally into every nook and corner of the state and appealed to the people to give him a chance to provide them with a clean and honest government. But the established political parties dismissed him as "a man who suffers from an exaggerated opinion of himself." Mrs Gandhi herself ridiculed him as "a political joke." The people of Andhra did not think all this was funny. In one fell swoop, they gave Mrs Gandhi and the other opposition parties in the state the drubbing of their lives by simply bundling them all out in the historic election to the state assembly.
Who is NTR? How did he perform this miracle? Can he deliver the goods? Can he live up to the people's expectations? What are his dreams and plans?
This first full length biography of the man attempts to answer these questions.
