Summary: This book is essentially an attempt to understand the social determinants of fertility in developing countries in general, and Asia and Africa in particular. The author examines in depth the dynamics of the relationship between fertility and several socio economic variables: the economic value of children; son preference; family structure; female status; ethnic plurality, and infant mortality at both the individual and societal levels. While various popularly-held myths are exploded in the process, attention is focussed on probable policies that might affect these determinants in a direction favourable to a decline in fertility, and on understanding the linkages between fertility, these determinants and the efficacy of policies adopted.
