Summary: This volume is a general introduction to the subject of participation by employers' and workers' organisations in economic and social planning. It opens with an outline of the various systems of planning in operation today, the purposes they set out to achieve and the facilities at their disposal. After analysing the aims behind efforts to ensure that occupational organisations are given an opportunity of taking. part both in the initial formulation procedures and in the final implementation, it describes the machinery set up for the purpose at the different levels-national, sectoral, regional and local, as well as multi-national and reviews the institutional and social problems that participation in planning frequently entails. It also describes the impact of participation on industrial relations and especially on the structure and role of Occupational organisations and the functions of labour administration services in connection with economic and social planning. In the conclusions, an attempt is made to evaluate the experience of different countries, with particular reference to the positive achievements and shortcomings, to suggest possible improvements and to review the general implications of participation and the prospects for the future.
