It provides a collection of the views of Indian and foreign economists on the leading problems and policies of the Indian economy, in a single volume. The need for such a selection has been spurred by the growing interest in India as a test case of economic development by governmental planning in a non-totalitarian framework.
The second edition contains a revised collection of articles which take into account a number of new policy issues that have arisen in recent years. Of the 42 readings, as many as 24 are new.
This selection covers the problems and policies of economic development in three broad areas: (1) economic planning through industrialization, (2) the agricultural sector, and (3) the foreign sector. The focus has been on articles dealing with problems having policy implications, using tools of analytical economics, and appraising economic policies adopted by the Government of India during the years of planned economic development. The editorial introduction to each part highlights the main issues raised in the articles.
This book of selected readings is designed for honours as well as postgraduate students of economics, and research workers. The book should be of equal interest to general readers, economists and Government officia is, and policy-makers who wish to formulate future economic policies with a more rigorous theoretical rationale than in the past.
