As India works and refashions herself into a social democracy, an account of the rise and awakening of the depres sed classes (Harijans) is a welcome addition to the socio-political history of modern India especially when this problem is receiving the utmost atten tion of the Government and other social agencies of the country. It is a saga of their age old sufferings and tries to show how they have come on the political map of India and also their elevation from social lepers to be the constitution makers, legislators, parliamentarians etc. It probes deep into their present day problems and suggests various means as to how this stigma of Indian society could be wiped out.
