In April, 197, the ever-present tensions in the Middle East erupted in a clash between Israel and the Arab nations. Secretary-General U Thant brought the Middle East situation to the attention. of UN members, but the Security Council failed to take action. By so failing, it contributed to the rapid development of militant actions that took place in the Middle East in May and June, 1967.
