Summary: This study was undertaken in the Department of Sociology, Panjab University, under the sponsorship and with the financial assistance of the Research Programmes Committee of the Planning Commission, Government of India. While the general pattern of investigation, organization and technique of the study was recommended by the Research Programmes Committee, the actual techniques of study and analysis followed by the author who was the Director of the research scheme, are largely of his own choice. Therefore, the responsibility for the facts presented and opinions ex pressed rests entirely upon the Director and not on the Planning Commission or the Research Programmes Committee. The work was started in January, 1963 and it took about two years to complete it. This included six months for the construction and pretest of the interview schedule and the preparation of the sampling frame, four months for the field investigation, six months for the processing of the data and the remaining period for the writing of the report.
