This study is a modest attempt to fill this gap as far as it is possible. Five industries have been selected here for analysis of wage differentials- iron and steel, automobiles, cotton textiles, sugar and tea. lron and steel is a basic industry and its wage frame is of vital significance to the cost structure of the entire economy, and hence its selection for our study. The automobile industry's wage structure is in the process of evolution and it was thought its analysis would be interesting as typical of the new industries. On both these industries the emphasis is on the discussion, first, of the degree of differentials that exists as between the wages and earnings of the various occupations as between the different plants, and secondly, on an explanation why these differentials exist.
