Great Janata Revolution

The Great Janata Revolution that buried the emerging dynastic dictatorship of Indira Gandhi and re-established people's
sovereignty in India is a development of far-reaching historic significance in this country. It has not merely saved Indian
history from a dark tunnel of personal dictatorship of the mother and her son but also opened a new chapter in the history of Parliamentary democracy itself. It remains to be seen whether dictatorship has been defeated for good or parliamentary democracy has been put on trial in the people's court.

One thing has unmistakably emerged; the people, especially in northern India, have become masters of their rulers. A period of people's challenge to the rulers and the ruling political systems has begun in Indian history and that is why it will be too early to say anything definite about the fate of democracy or dictatorship at this stage. The most backward and the abjectly poor people of the northern Hindi belt have shaped the history of India by throwing their powerful rulers with one hard stroke out there in the dustbin of history. The like of this has simply not happened in the entire course of Indian history since the Stone Age. To treat this revolution as a mere election is to diminish its historic importance and insult people's achievement.
